How To Clean Your Pool

When your pool is used more than often, it tends to get cloudy because of the chemicals and dirt from all those swimmers. Not to mention the debris and other contaminants it can get from the surroundings.

To keep your backyard paradise clean, you need some tools at hand. But before you go to the nearest pool store and lavish on supplies, save yourself some money and buy only the necessary ones for your pool needs. With the right tools and some tips from us, you’ll be cleaning like a pro in no time.

Water Test Strips

Water test strips allow you to check the quality of your pool water. Regularly checking the water with these strips is incredibly important to determine when you need to add chemicals to your pool and keep the unpleasant bacteria and algae away.

There are three main things you need to test for are pH level, total alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. What you need to do with these strips is to hold them underwater for a few seconds. Once the color of the strip changes, compare it to a provided color graduation scale for the reading.

Stock up on these strips because you will have to conduct tests weekly. Aside from that, it’s also a good idea to take a water sample in for professional testing at least once a month by your local pool store.

Pool Shock

The chemicals in your pool keep the water from becoming filthy gross. They regulate amounts of oils and dead human skin cells and even kill the microbes.

Out of all the chemicals in your arsenal, pool shock is probably the most important one to keep around. A pool shock brings the sanitizer levels in your pool water up to where they need to be to kill bacteria and even address mild cases of algae.

For the most effect, choose a calcium hypochlorite shock while keeping in mind not to go over or under the required amount to prevent additional damage to your pool liner and filter. Always make sure that you’re wearing gears when you’re adding this. If your pool is used more often, then all the more you need to shock it. Shock at least once every two weeks. The best time to shock your pool is at night to reduce the effects of UV degradation where the sun burns off the chlorine.

Algae Brush

The scourge of having algae in your pool requires a special tool such as an algae brush. An algae brush has stainless steel bristles that allow it to easily break the algae’s hold on surfaces.

Consider scrubbing your pool’s surfaces as your new pastime. Whenever you have free time, do some scrubbing. This way, you can ensure that there is no algae build-up.

Stainless steel algae brushes are best for concrete or gunite pools while nylon bristle pool brushes are for vinyl liner pools (this avoids damaging it).

Manual Vacuum

Manual options for your pool cleaning tools can help you spot minor problems on your pool before they become a major problem.

A manual vacuum helps you quickly remove the algae that you’ve just brushed off from your pool’s surfaces. Just make sure you vacuum to “waste” to prevent the algae from passing through your filter. You’ll also need a telescoping pole and a vacuum hose to use a manual vacuum.

Telescoping Pole

A telescoping pole simply means that you can extend the pole as an old-fashioned telescope does. This tool allows you to reach the depths of your pool without having to reach, bend, or walk around the pool.

Most telescoping poles come with the option for interchangeable heads so you’ll only need one for your pool skimmer, manual vacuum, or pool brush.

Filter Cleaner

Despite your constant efforts to keep your pool clean, dirt and grime will still build-up. A little dirt might not hurt in some cases but it can get problematic when the dirt is accumulated, particularly on your pool’s filter.

So, time and again, you will have to clean the filter to keep it working at an optimal level. A filter cleaner helps remove residue and improve the efficiency of your filter. The more you use your pool, the more often you’ll have to clean your pool’s filter.

To determine whether your filter needs a good cleaning, pay attention to your pressure gauge and check if your pool water is becoming cloudy.
